ACCC to Host Twitter Chat on Metastatic Breast Cancer

#MBCchat scheduled for Tuesday, September 27 at 12:00 pm ET

ROCKVILLE, Md. – In support of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), Avon Foundation, Cancer Support Community, and Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance are proud to host a Twitter chat to share resources about metastatic breast cancer. An estimated 150,000 to 250,000 women in the U.S. are currently living with metastatic breast cancer—an incurable condition. These individuals have few treatment options, and their median survival is only three years.

While breast cancer is a high-profile disease, receiving significant private and public research funding and focused awareness and prevention initiatives, patients with metastatic breast cancer face unique challenges. According to the Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Alliance “public messaging about the [breast cancer] ‘cure’ and survivorship is so pervasive that people diagnosed at stage IV with metastatic breast cancer can be stigmatized by the perception that they’ve failed to take care of themselves or undergo annual screening.” [1]

Scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, from 12:00 to 12:30 pm EST, the Twitter chat will raise public awareness about metastatic breast cancer; talk about current efforts to expand the breast cancer conversation; solicit input from metastatic breast cancer patients; and share resources and information about the ACCC Metastatic Breast Cancer project. During #MBCchat, the Association of Community Cancer Centers will be joined by representatives from the following organizations to lend their expertise and answer participants’ questions:

To join the conversation, post questions on Twitter with the hashtag #MBCchat and follow the discussion live on Twitter. A summary of the chat will be posted afterward on the ACCC website.
