Multiple Myeloma: Transplant Treatment Path

Transplant Treatment Path: Optimizing Patient-Centered Care for ASCT in Multiple Myeloma was an ACCC educational initiative aimed at improving provider communication to optimize the treatment of multiple myeloma patients in the community cancer center pre- and post-autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). The project explored the reasons for, and develop suggestions to correct, discrepancies in the treatment journey for patients with multiple myeloma who receive ASCT as part of their therapy.

The following ACCC-member programs with transplant centers participated in the project:

  • Emory University Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant, Winship Cancer Institute
  • GW Medical Faculty Associates, Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center
  • Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
  • Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University

Process Improvement White Paper

MM-The-Transplant-Treatment-Path-200x307To identify key opportunities for process and communication improvements, ACCC conducted regional process improvement workshops at four transplant centers and invited one to two referring practices to participate in the discussion. Through four interactive workshops, clinicians, transplant coordinators, and administrators identified ways to improve communication and clinical workflow processes as patients with multiple myeloma undergo ASCT. The management of multiple myeloma remains clinically complex, but effective changes can be made to improve how patients receive care that is co-managed between the primary oncologists in the community and the transplant center.

Actionable takeaways from these workshops are summarized in this publication that includes sections on:

  • Results of the project needs assessment survey
  • Patient education & engagement
  • Patient preparation for ASCT
  • Psychosocial support & financial counseling
  • Care coordination & medical co-management
  • Process improvement resources
