Association of Community Cancer Centers to Honor Leading Cancer Prevention and Screening Advocate and Researcher

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Paul F. Engstrom, MD, will be honored with the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ 2013 Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Research Award for his work in advocating for cancer prevention and screening programs in research throughout the U.S. and around the globe. ACCC will present Dr. Engstrom with the award on Friday, October 4, 2013, at the 30th National Oncology Conference, to be held in Boston, Mass.

Dr. Engstrom is the Acting Chairman of Medical Oncology and the Senior Vice President of Extramural Research Programs at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pa. He has devoted his professional and academic career to improving cancer prevention and early detection research and service.

In 1979, Dr. Engstrom established the first Cancer Prevention and Control Program in a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center at Fox Chase. Twelve years later, he established a highly successful and ongoing training and career development program that continues to groom national leaders in cancer prevention and control research.

He has been the principal investigator for numerous cancer prevention and screening research programs, including the Early Detection Research Network focused on breast and ovarian cancer screening and diagnosis.

Dr. Engstrom is a founding member of the American Russian Cancer Alliance, which was instrumental in leading the Russian Duma and the Blokhin Russian National Cancer Center to pass legislation controlling cigarette sales, smoking restrictions, and smoking cessation programs in Russia.
