Optimal oncology practice management and operations hinge on health technology and performance and interoperability. As the use of guideline-concordant biomarker testing increases, cancer programs’ technical infrastructure must keep pace. A tangle of EHR systems and external technology platforms that are not conversant can make data transmission challenging and further hinder implementation of testing and treatment recommendations.
To bridge this gap and facilitate interoperability, the Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC), with its program partner LUNGevity and support by AstraZeneca and Genentech, gleaned insights from stakeholders and applied those findings to define solutions and highlight processes that equip cancer care teams with the tools they need to integrate EHR systems.
Along with data standardization, the program has identified a need for greater collaboration among key stakeholders in oncology: cancer programs, reference labs, and EHR vendors. Additionally, staff subsets within cancer programs can strive for increased transparency and seamlessness with each other, including IT teams, oncologists, advanced practice providers, and pathologists.

Streamline biomarker testing and improve patient care with these quick integration tips for faster, more accurate, and efficient genomic data reporting.
This roadmap equips multidisciplinary cancer care teams with essential information to establish the foundation for EHR integration, outlines strategies for team preparation, and provides guidance on effective implementation and evaluation processes.
Access a collection of tools, publications, examples, and insights from various cancer programs to assist cancer care teams in navigating EHR integrations for biomarker test ordering and reporting.
On October 4, 2023, ACCC leadership convened a multistakeholder summit to discuss effective practices and develop workaround solutions to overcome barriers impeding biomarker testing integration into EHR systems. Download a thematic analysis of those discussions, which includes highlights of emerging opportunities to guide stakeholders as they initiate and build EHR integrations.
As cancer programs seek new ways to improve health technology performance and interoperability for biomarker testing processes, ACCC explores current challenges and effective practices to use EHRs, add-on modules, and other integration solutions/workarounds to streamline testing, access reports, and improve operational efficiency.
