On April 5, 2018, Governor David Ige signed the Hawaii Our Care, Our Choice Act into law—allowing mentally capable,
terminally ill adults with six months or less to live to request medical aid-in-dying medication from their doctor which they self-administer if their suffering becomes unbearable, to bring about a peaceful death. This law went into effect on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
