About the Dempsey Center

Known originally as The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, the Dempsey Center was founded in 2008, as an affiliate of Central Maine Medical Center and a result of the Dempsey family’s personal experience. When Patrick’s mother Amanda was battling ovarian cancer, they recognized that wellness and complementary medicine are crucial components of quality care.

The Center has occupied its current location in Lewiston, a beautifully renovated mill building, since 2012. In 2018, shortly after achieving independent nonprofit status, the Dempsey Center merged with the Cancer Community Center in South Portland, and thus began operating through that location as well. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the Center’s plans to create virtual services, and today, almost all services are offered through Dempsey Connects.

The Opportunity

Upon the departure of a highly successful, long-time leader, the organization is seeking an Executive Director who is excited about building on the Dempsey Center’s incredible history and expanding its impact in the future. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to take the helm of a leading cancer support organization looking to expand its reach in Maine and also continuing to find ways to contribute nationally and internationally.

The Dempsey Center is seeking an experienced, empathetic and visionary leader to oversee all facets of the organization’s work and to guide it to its next stage of development. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, program development, strategic planning, fundraising of the organization, and reports directly to a highly engaged Board of Directors. The individual will work collaboratively with a highly experienced and capable staff to ensure continued high-quality service, expand access to programming and position the organization as it continues to play a leadership role in the field.  This is an exciting opportunity for a leader who is passionate about both the mission and the model of the Dempsey Center and has the drive to increase its impact and reach.

  • Developing and executing strategies that increase the visibility, capacity, and impact of the Dempsey Center’s key programs in communities across Maine, including in-person and virtual services.
  • Inspiring and motivating staff through collaborative and empowering leadership that maximizes staff talents and skills.
  • Leading a comprehensive fundraising strategy that builds on existing networks and pursues new funding avenues.
  • Maintaining the financial viability of the organization by ensuring diverse and sustainable revenue streams.
  • Representing the organization externally with funders, partner organizations and others in order to further the mission.
  • Promoting the organization’s values of commitment, teamwork, humility, compassion and resilience.

With a strong equity focus, this leader will be committed to expanding access to services, particularly in underserved and rural communities. The ideal candidate will be an individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics and values and will be energized by the opportunity to impact lives in a powerful way.

Strategic and Visionary Leadership

The Executive Director will be an experienced leader, who in partnership with the Board, sets and clearly articulates a vision for the organization. They will have the proven ability to develop and promote the strategies needed to advance the work of a mission-based organization, from funding to program delivery to evaluation of impact. The Executive Director will understand the importance of efficient operational and financial administration and will possess the ability to set strategy, prioritize, inspire and empower an exceptionally talented staff. With experience leading through change, the Executive Director will consistently have an eye on the future and be looking for ways for the Dempsey Center to grow, collaborate, and lead in the evolving landscape of cancer supportive care. Working directly with program, development, and operations staff, they will skillfully assess and anticipate challenges to set and implement a strategic vision for the Dempsey Center’s next phase of growth.  

Strong Fundraiser and Partnership Orientation

The Executive Director will be an energetic fundraiser/relationship builder who will fully embrace this aspect of the role, enabling the Dempsey Center to maintain its current funding base and access previously untapped support. A genuine and inspiring public speaker, this individual will be able to effectively articulate and convey the Dempsey Center’s mission and priorities to a wide range of stakeholders including funders, donors, healthcare systems, government agencies, partner organizations, community organizations, Board of Directors and staff, moving easily among these various worlds. The Executive Director will be skilled at building partnerships with other institutions and leaders in the field to enhance the organization’s impact and advance its mission and strategic priorities. They will seek opportunities to highlight and amplify the impact of the organization in the media and identify ways for the Dempsey Center to advance the field.

Management and Business Acumen

The Executive Director will bring experience with efficient operational and financial administration and will possess the ability to set strategy, prioritize, inspire and empower an exceptionally talented staff. The Executive Director will also be skilled at presenting financial and operational information in a clear, concise fashion to a range of constituents, including a Board of Directors. They will bring an understanding of both the importance and power of technology, and the knowledge about how to leverage those tools to expand an organization’s reach. They will understand and implement best practices in nonprofit management, strategic planning, marketing and communications, and fundraising to meet ambitious goals and ensure the growth and sustainability of the organization.
