President's Message
Paul A. Fishkin, MD

Paul A. FishkinEarlier this year, IMOS members adopted a proposal from the IMOS Board of Directors to change the Society's Bylaws and permit ALL health professionals engaged in the administration, care, and/or treatment of patients with cancer to be associate members, vote, and hold certain Board positions. As a result, ISOHA no longer exists.

In addition to providing expanded membership privileges, at its Annual Membership Conference IMOS is offering specialized tracks to both business staff and mid-level clinical staff. This Conference is right around the corner and will take place on Friday, November 12 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare Hotel and Conference Center in Rosemont, Ill.

I hope you are planning to join us in Rosemont as we have an exciting program planned with some of the most knowledgeable speakers in the country. For example,

  • After I heard Marc Halley speak on generational factors affecting the community oncology workforce at the ACCC's Presidents' Retreat in January, I knew you'd want to hear him, too!
  • Likewise, Cindy Parman and Jim Leach are experts in the business economics arena in terms of preparing for audits and using smart documentation to maximize payment for services—they speak all over the country.
  • End-of-life care is something the oncology team deals with on a daily basis, and Damiano de Sano Iocovozzi has even written a book on it, which Donna Krueger read and highly recommends.
  • Sexual problems and cancer is not as frequently discussed, but after I heard a session on this topic at the ASCO Annual Meeting, I became convinced it should be.
  • And, lastly, how fortunate we are to hear such local talent as Drs. Jon Richards and Lucy Godley speak to us about advances in treating melanoma and chronic myeloid leukemia, respectively.

There's still time to register for the Conference. Go to the IMOS website and click on Meetings and Events. You’ll find the full Conference agenda and registration form there.

See you soon in Rosemont!

Sincerely,
Paul A. Fishkin, MD

ISOHA's Perspective on the Merger with IMOS

Dear Colleagues:

I think the combination of ISOHA and IMOS was an inevitable one. Administrative, clinical, and physician personnel have always worked collaboratively in their practices to deliver quality cancer care. My hope is that the merger of these two groups will provide a united front when dealing with the significant economic challenges that all of our community practices are facing.

We are heading into an era in community-based oncology in which the delivery of care and how we are paid for providing this care is going to significantly change. Many practices are merging while others are collaborating with local hospitals. In addition to insurance reform, there will be an increased emphasis on quality and cost-effective care measures in determining reimbursement, the use of electronic health information, and such care models as accountable care organizations and medical homes.

As community oncology practices, we will need to stay constantly informed so we will be able to continue delivering quality care in the midst of all these changes My hope is that you will use IMOS and its educational programs and meetings to help you stay up-to-date in this changing and challenging environment. In the near future, we will begin providing monthly conference calls as a regularly-scheduled forum for office staff to express and discuss the issues they are having in their practices.

I encourage you to invite your clinical and administrative personnel to go to the IMOS website and become a member of IMOS. And please remember to register for the IMOS Membership Conference taking place on November 12th at the Crowne Plaza O’Hare on Friday, November 12. We have a great program planned for everyone engaged in oncology care and administration!

Sincerely,
Donna Krueger, RN, OCN

Drugs in the News from the IMOS Corporate Members

The FDA has approved an expanded indication for lapatinib (Tykerb, GlaxoSmithKline) in combination with letrozole (Femara, NOVARTIS AG) for the treatment of hormone-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)–positive advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women for whom hormonal therapy is indicated. Lapatinib previously was approved in combination with capecitabine (Xeloda, Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc) for the treatment of advanced or metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer in patients who have received prior therapy including an anthracycline, a taxane, and trastuzumab. The FDA approved GENENTECH INC.'S (South San Francisco, CA) anti-cancer drug Rituxan® (rituximab) to treat certain patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Rituxan is intended for patients with CLL who are beginning chemotherapy for the first time and for those who have not responded to other cancer drugs for CLL. Rituxan is administered with two other chemotherapy drugs—fludarabine and cyclophosphamide. For more information, go to:

NOVARTIS (East Hanover, N.J.) announced FDA approval of Tasigna® (nilotinib) 150 mg capsules for the treatment of adult patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase. Tasigna has been approved in more than 80 countries for the treatment of chronic phase and accelerated phase Ph+ CML in adult patients resistant or intolerant to at least one prior therapy, including Gleevec (imatinib). The FDA has approved Jevtana® (cabazitaxel) Injection, a chemotherapy drug used in combination with the steroid prednisone to treat men with prostate cancer. SANOFI-AVENTIS U.S. announced that the FDA has approved a new one-vial formulation of Taxotere® (docetaxel) Injection Concentrate. Anticipated to become available to cancer treatment clinics and hospitals in the fall, the one-vial Taxotere will come in both 80 mg and 20 mg dosages. Because the one-vial Taxotere eliminates the need for the initial dilution step with a diluent, it is expected to help simplify preparation (Oncology Issues, September/October 2010).
