Large Attendance at ACCC's 2008 National Oncology Economics Conference in San Francisco

Almost 600 cancer care professionals gathered in San Francisco, Calif., for  ACCC's 25th Oncology Economics Conference to discuss the solutions, strategies, and innovations needed to meet rising demand, rising costs, and reduced reimbursements. The meeting featured in-depth coverage of the many regulatory and reimbursement changes affecting oncology and explored how hospitals and oncology practices are dealing with evolving restraints on the delivery of quality care. In addition, oncology pharmacists gathered for ACCC's Oncology Pharmacy Education Network (OPEN) meeting.

Donald L. MortonDonald L. Morton, MD, (center) received the Association of Community Cancer Centers' 2008 Clinical Research Award. Also shown are ACCC President Ernest R. Anderson, Jr., MS, RPh, (left) and ACCC Executive Director Christian G. Downs, JD, MHA.

Dr. Morton was honored for his extensive research, leadership, and commitment to individuals with melanoma. Dr. Morton is chief of the Melanoma Program and director of the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif. Dr. Morton's pioneering work with intratumoral bacille Calmette-Guerin for melanoma represented the first successful clinical application of immunotherapy against a metastatic human cancer. His innovative studies of sentinel node mapping changed the standard of care for patients with early-stage malignant melanoma and other solid cancers that drain via the lymphatic system.
