44th ACCC Annual Meeting: Capitol Hill Day

As Congress continues to deliberate reforms to our healthcare system, now is the time to come to Capitol Hill to share the real-world impact that federal health policy has on cancer patients and care delivery in your community.

Join colleagues from your state on Capitol Hill Day, Wednesday, March 14, 2018, and meet with legislators to advocate for improved research funding, greater access to quality healthcare, and payment reform. No need to be a “policy expert” or familiar with specific legislation. Scheduled by ACCC, the congressional meetings are an opportunity to share your story with lawmakers so they better understand the realities and challenges of cancer care delivery in your community.

Luncheon Guest Speaker: Douglas R. Lowy, MD, Deputy Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the federal government’s principal agency for cancer research and training, will share how our nation’s investment in cancer research has led to new ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer, and the importance of protecting federal funding for medical research.

Who Should Attend? Cancer center executives, physicians, nurses, administrators, pharmacists, social workers, financial advocates, and other members of the multidisciplinary cancer care team.

Attendance was at a record high as nearly 65 ACCC members representing 143 districts participated in 88 congressional meetings for ACCC Capitol Hill Day on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. The event kicked off on Tuesday evening with an inspiring speech from former U.S. senator and cancer survivor Norm Coleman (MN) who thanked ACCC members for attending Capitol Hill Day and making a difference in their communities.

During a lunch address on Wednesday, Congressman Brian Higgins (D-NY), who co-sponsors the Cancer Drug Parity Act of 2017 (H.R. 1409), stressed the importance of Capitol Hill Day to ACCC members, "Your constituents are our constituents," and "your presence here [on Capitol Hill] is very important."

ACCC members advocated on behalf of their cancer patients for access to quality care and affordable insurance coverage, a commitment to value-based care, increased funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and cancer research, and the Cancer Drug Parity Act of 2017 (H.R. 1409).
