E. Strode Weaver Elected New President of the Association of Community Cancer Centers
Hospital Administrator to Lead National Organization for the Cancer Care Team
ROCKVILLE, MD—E. Strode Weaver, FACHE, MBA, MHSA, has been elected president of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), the leading advocacy organization for the health care team caring for patients with cancer. He assumed leadership on March 11, 2005, at the Association's 31st Annual National Meeting held in Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Weaver has more than 25 years of healthcare executive experience in a range of organizations, from small rural hospitals to a multi-hospital system. He has held leadership positions in hospital-based oncology services for 12 years.
Mr. Weaver is the Executive Director of Oncology Services for the clinical area of the University of Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center in Denver, Colorado’s only academic medical center and a leading cancer research program in the Rocky Mountain region. Since 2002 he has directed the service program, which includes numerous multidisciplinary site-specific clinics, bone marrow transplantation, outreach programs, breast center, radiation therapy, integrative medicine center, patient support, and resource center.
From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Weaver was service line administrator at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington State’s largest tertiary care hospital serving the Puget Sound area. He directed development and operations of all outpatient cancer services delivered in seven regional locations. His responsibilities included medical oncology clinics, radiation therapy, tumor registry, community education, cancer research, and marketing of the oncology service line.
Mr. Weaver will devote his year as ACCC President to addressing policy, reimbursement, and safety issues that affect delivery of quality care to patients with cancer.
"A great deal of uncertainty exists within the cancer community as to how recent federal policy and reimbursement initiatives may restructure the delivery of cancer care," said Mr. Weaver. “ACCC’s challenge is to keep its membership current on these issues and provide them a voice in the determination as to how the future may unfold."
Mr. Weaver has a master’s degree in Health Services Administration from Arizona State University and an MBA in Management from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE) and a past member of the Regent’s Advisory Council, Northwest region, of ACHE.
ACCC’s unique membership of more than 650 hospital cancer programs and oncology private practices includes all members of the cancer care team: medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, cancer program administrators and medical directors, oncology nurses and pharmacists, oncology social workers, and cancer program data managers.
ACCC promotes the continuum of quality cancer care (research, prevention, screening, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, psychosocial services, rehabilitation, and hospice). It encourages comprehensive interdisciplinary community cancer program development and provides education about approaches for the effective management, delivery, and financing of comprehensive cancer care. The Association has proactively worked with state and federal government on behalf of cancer patients and their families on issues of access to appropriate treatment and to clinical trials. ACCC has been a major advocate of developing state-level advocacy groups to work with state government, third-party intermediaries, and other insurers who are usually organized at the state level.
The Association of Community Cancer Centers provides a national forum for addressing issues that affect community cancer programs, such as regulatory and legislative issues, measurements of the quality of care, and clinical research.
