James N. Atkins, MD, to Receive Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Community Clinical Scientist Award
ROCKVILLE, MD—James N. Atkins, MD, clinical associate professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., will be one of three physicians to be honored with the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ Community Clinical Scientist Award. The award recognizes active community clinical research leaders and is given in recognition of Dr. Atkins’ contributions in the fight against cancer.
The award will be presented to Dr. Atkins during the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ 32nd Annual National Meeting at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, in Arlington, Va., March 15, 2006.
Dr. Atkins has been involved in cancer research through the national clinical trials system for more than 20 years. He is the principal investigator for the Southeast Cancer Control Consortium of the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). Dr. Atkins has worked extensively to promote recruitment of patients into clinical trials. He is interested both in cancer treatment and prevention, through improved quality of life and weight management.
Dr. Atkins, and the two other award winners, will become lifetime members of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) National Academy of Community Oncology Scientists, which will serve as a valuable resource to ACCC, the National Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical companies, and other organizations involved in community-based cancer research.
The Association of Community Cancer Centers provides a national forum for addressing issues that affect community cancer programs, such as regulatory and legislative issues, measurements of the quality of care, and clinical research. Its unique membership of more than 650 hospital cancer programs and oncology private practices includes all members of the cancer care team: medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, cancer program administrators and medical directors, oncology nurses, pharmacists, radiation therapists, oncology social workers, and cancer program data managers.
