Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Update on Pathologic Considerations and Treatment Selection/Duration

Continuing Education Alliance This program describes new recommendations regarding multidisciplinary approaches to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) classification as well as evidence-based strategies to optimize first-line therapy for the individual patient with NSCLC based on the results of pathologic analyses, the performance status of the patient, and the efficacy and safety of available cytotoxic and biologic agents. These factors, as well as the disease response to first-line therapy, form the basis for decision making regarding maintenance therapy.

Practicing Clinicians Exchange

Practicing Clinicians ExchangeINTRODUCING PCE ONCOLOGY! Education designed exclusively for the NP/PA oncology specialist.

Practicing Clinicians Exchange (PCE) is dedicated to providing nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in oncology with continuing education tailored to their clinical practice. Until now, there have been no educational initiatives designed specifically for NPs and PAs who specialize in oncology.  NPs and PAs in oncology are not only fulfilling traditional roles in patient counseling and supportive care, but are also taking on more advanced clinical activities, such as writing chemotherapy orders and assisting with new patient consults. The mission of PCE Oncology is to provide high-level learning to NPs and PAs in oncology through live, enduring, and online activities.

Key Challenges to Lung Cancer Clinical Trial Recruitment and Retention

Chair: Joan Schiller, MD
Tuesday, June 14, 2011
12:00 PM-1:00 PM ET

Broadcast to Re-air at 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM ET. Please adjust to your time zone.

Although it is recognized that clinical trials are critical to the development of new treatment regimens that are needed to improve the treatment of patients with lung cancer, only 14% of patients with lung cancer are aware of clinical trials as a treatment option, and fewer than 10% of patients with lung cancer are enrolled in clinical trials. Commitment from clinical researchers, patient advocates, government agencies, and private industries is needed to improve clinical trial enrollment and retention through building relationships, strengthening communication, educating patients and caregivers, streamlining protocols, and developing clinical trials that address paramount needs in patients with lung cancer.

This activity will illustrate the importance of clinical trial enrollment and retention in advancing patient care, explain potential barriers that impact enrollment in clinical trials, and discuss strategies that can be used to overcome challenges in recruiting and retaining participants in lung cancer clinical trials.

This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
