Nearly 70% of those diagnosed with cancer are not satisfied with treatments offered within conventional medicine alone and utilize complementary and alternative treatments. Integrative medicine has the potential to be the dominant form of treatment for people diagnosed with cancer. The talk reviews the pros and cons of lifestyle and supplementation, focusing on antioxidants, fatty acids and specific herbs. The lecture reviews the evidence and goals of co-management of alternative with conventional treatments.

Learning Objectives include:

  1. Are natural therapies combined with active conventional treatment a rational and effective treatment in cancer?
  2. Integrative oncology what are the cancer specific considerations?
  3. What are recommended lifestyle interventions during treatment?
  4. How do antioxidant therapies work best with radiation and chemotherapy?

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) Oncology Nutrition Practice Group. offers numerous oncology–specific resources, including books, book reviews, and publications. Some materials are free, others at a reduced rate for ADA members. One free resource is the Oncology Evidence–based Nutrition Practice Guidelines, available at the National Guideline Clearinghouse.


ACCC's MyNetwork

ACCC provides a number of articles and tools, including "Worksheets for Scoring Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA);" "Building a Nutrition Program within a New Comprehensive Cancer Center, Oncology Issues 2010;" "Certified Specialists in Oncology Nutrition, Oncology Issues 2009; and the "Functional Assessment of Anorexia Cachexia Therapy (FAACT) Questionnaire."
