Payment Systems: Current Challenges and Future Models
ACCC's second town hall discussion on October 4, 2013, explored the pressing issues surrounding the complex healthcare payment system. Panelists considered the following questions:
- Are rising treatment costs and decreasing reimbursement on a collision course that will affect providers' ability to care for oncology patients?
- Can a solution be found in one of the innovative new payment models that have been proposed?

On October 4, ACCC hosted a lively town hall discussion focused on the transformative shift underway in healthcare payment systems as reimbursement moves from volume-based, fee-for-service models to new value- and quality-based payment methodologies.
Panelists agreed that the current payment system is broken and that migration from a system that rewards volume to a system that reimburses for quality and value is necessary. But when challenged to come up with solutions that could be put into action in the next 18 to 24 months, panelists’ perspectives diverged. Read our blog to learn their perspectives.
Shift in Site of Care: Real or Fiction?
The first town hall in the series, held March 8, 2013, explored the following key questions:
- Is site of care is shifting? What impact would that have on patient access, provider process, and the distribution, prescription, and payment for innovative drugs and biologics?
- As the healthcare environment evolves and new payment models are explored, how will clinician decision-making be impacted?

One way to ensure a place at the table? Invite everyone to sit down together. On March 8 the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) did exactly that with its Town Hall Meeting "Shift in Site of Care, Real or Fiction?"
Panelists explored issues around the shift in site of care and its implications, as well as the move away from fee-for-service reimbursement to shared-risk models such as bundled payments, episode-based payments, and ACOs. Read our blog to find out what they had to say.
