Overview
Association of Community Cancer Centers
As part of its "Improving Quality Care in Small-Population Cancers" education program, ACCC's small-population cancers project on multiple myeloma seeks to raise awareness about the special needs of patients with multiple myeloma. The projects aims to provide members of the cancer care team with the most current information about how to support multiple myeloma patients throughout their illness from diagnosis, through treatment, which might include a bone marrow transplant, and follow-up care.
To lay the groundwork for this initiative, ACCC, with the assistance of Meniscus Educational Institute and Spectrum Medical Education, created and implemented an online needs assessment survey to gauge ACCC members' knowledge about the care and treatment of patients with multiple myeloma and their families. Among the questions explored:
- How cases are reviewed in a multidisciplinary manner
- What guidelines are followed
- What type of monitoring takes place and which is appropriate
- Whether clear policies and procedures are in place to deal with any financial or managerial challenges
- How patients are transitioned between care settings
- How to ensure that team members receive the most current information about managing the patient with multiple myeloma.
Analysis of the suvey findings together with in-depth telephone interviews and guidance from the project's expert advisory board were then used to develop the effective practices for treatment patients with multiple myeloma.
