Overview
In 2010, the Association of Community Cancer Centers launched its Improving Quality Care in Small-Population Cancers initiative with a focus on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The goals of this initial two-year project were to understand the barriers to treatment; to assess the most effective practices for treating CML within the community setting; and to identify Community Resource Centers (CRCs) to serve as virtual "experts in residence" for ACCC members. Project components included surveys of ACCC Cancer Program members regarding CML, followed by in-depth interviews to help identify effective practices in treatment patients with small-population cancers such as CML.
In July 2011, ACCC released findings of its study on most effective practices in the care of patients with CML. Findings suggest that successful cancer programs take a team-based approach, deploying case managers or navigators to coordinate care, which may include home and family assessment, nutrition and pharmacist consults, and easy access to the physicians, social worker, nurses, and dietitian.
